2021 Pre-season Umpire and Rules Clinic – Mile High Little League

All classes are free and open to everyone. No commitment to serve as an umpire is required. Anyone interested in learning about Little League rules and the league’s umpire program is welcome. The first class listed below is MANDATORY for all coaches, managers, and umpires. (All coaches, managers, umpires must attend just one of the sessions. A total of four sessions will be offered before the season starts, (see dates and times above) to accommodate those who cannot make the first session). Classes will be targeted to the coaches and umpires in the Major/Minor/Rookie divisions, but other divisions will be discussed. Feel free to attend as many or as few of the sessions as you would like.  Each short course, even when combined, cannot provide all the necessary training for a new umpire, they are intended to be introductory and serve as a springboard for an umpire’s self-study.

Please dress for the weather unless your course is on Zoom. Four courses will be available:

  1) Pre-season rules/expectations meeting. [One hour] Attendance at one session is mandatory for all umpires, coaches and managers. This session will cover: the league’s umpire policy and bylaws; code of conduct; special rules for each division; Recent Little League Rules changes/updates; equipment expectations; COVID Safe Practice and the Public Health order and other items.  This is not a “clinic” so much as it is an opportunity for everyone who participates on the field to get on the same page about some important issues before the season begins.

  2) Umpire Basics and “Before the first pitch” [One hour] This session is targeted to new and novice umpires, but may be a useful review for all. Purpose: introduce general requirements and overview for a Little League Umpire. Review reference materials, uniforms, equipment, pre-game preparation, and safety issues. Students will learn the responsibilities of umpires at the game site, which begin before the first pitch, and will learn all basic umpire mechanics (signals). We will also discuss strategies for dealing with difficult situations and disputes on the field.

  3) Live-ball Mechanics and Intro the Two-Umpire system [One hour] This session will teach the principles of proper positioning and movement on the field, in order to assist the umpire in getting into the best position to make a call. This session will also teach umpires how to work with a partner in the two-umpire system, in accordance with the Little League Field Mechanics Manual for the 60-foot diamond (Major division and below - baseball and all divisions of softball).

  4) Video-assisted Little League Rules Overview/Refresher [90 minutes - Zoom platform] Rather than simply read and summarize rules, we will use live baseball video clips collected from all levels of baseball (Little League to MLB) to illustrate specific rules.  We will discuss certain rules and then view videos that illustrate how the rule works in actual game scenarios.
